We did our first race together last summer, the Chick-fil-a 5k, then the Diva race. This year, we started out doing the 5k 4H last week and yesterday, we did the Mel T. Ingram Memorial 5k race. I remember wanting to do this race last year but I was a bit concerned about the hilly course. For some reason, I did not run it then.

The race was to start at 8am. Since this is the closet race yet, we left the house around 7:30. There were ample parking and we quickly got our race packet. While standing in line to pick up my race packet, I spoke to the race organizer, she was super nice and friendly. The race packet had lots of goodies that included a shirt, coupon for chick-fil-a, a week pass to the fitness center, flag, stickers, poster, hand sanitizer, cookies and candy. This was probably one of the nicest race packet I received. So many of the local races give out only t-shirt and race numbers.

At 8:00, the race started. We started towards the back and off we went. There were several hills on this course with lots of turns but it was super organized with volunteers to guide you at every turn. The first hill came pretty quickly. I was glad to be done with it, then another hill. At mile 3 came the last hill toward the finish line. I could hear people cheering enthusiastically for the finishers. I was glad to cross the finish line. I cooled down and waited for my MIL to finish. She did great. Her time was 1 minute longer than last week's race but considering the hills she did awesome. I was so proud of her. She won her age group and I won the first female masters (mastes=over 40 yo). Another first for me. I was very excited! Great metals, plaque and goodies for winners.

The race organizers made this a very friendly, fun and supportive event. It was super organized with plenty of volunteers so there were no confusion about the course. Classic race series did the race timing and placement. Walgreens even had a booth giving away lots of goodies! It was such a great race experience overall. I look forward to doing this race again next year!
This was the smallest race I've ever ran. I am estimating 15-20 people?? It was close to home and I do a lot of training here.

Being a small local race, it did not have a race timer. The race would be 2 loops on the walking trail and marked with blue chalk. I was confused about where to turn but I figure I would follow the other runners! At 9 am the race started and it was starting to get hot. I found myself towards the front of the small pack of runners. There were 2 other runners ahead of me and I was the first female runner so far. I was exciting how well I was doing in this race. I wanted to win first overall female so I kept up my pace and even ran faster at certain spots. I did not look back to see where the other runners were.

I did not pass or see any other runners/walkers during the race except for the 2 other runners ahead of me during the start of the race!

I was the first female to finish the race and the top 3 finisher. This was the first time I won the overall female category! I am your average runner so a win like this was awesome!

Unfortunately, I let an incident upset me at the race (even though I was able to resolve it before hand). I let it overshadow my win and instead focused on my frustration yesterday.

Today, I woke up feeling better and not bitter.. I do not have to hold on to negativity forever! I think my marathon training really helped me to work on being more positive and not to hold on to negativity (for too long)!

This has been a specular month for me. Completing my first marathon and winning the overall female. There is only one "first" marathon and my "first" time winning the top female runner so I should and will relish in my success.

Today, I choose to be positive :)

I am now just coming off my marathon high! I ran the first inaugural race of Chasing Jefferson Davis Marathon in Abbeville, Georgia. The race turned out to be very small with maybe 30 marathon runners. There were three other people also running their first marathon! For the most part, I was not nervous about the race until my drive in that morning. One of the many benefits of running a small race is I can arrive 20 minutes before race time, get a good parking spot, use the restroom, have my energy drink and still make it to the starting time on time! At 6:30 or so, (in conjunction with the half marathons at a different location) the cannons were fired and off we went. The course consisted of mainly back roads with approximately 6 miles of dirt road.

The first half mile or so, it seemed like the other runners were also running at a slower, easy pace. I briefly chatted with a few runners who passed me. Mile 1 passed pretty quickly and because of my pride, I could not let myself walk. My plan is to ( loosely follow the galloway plan) 1 mile run and 1 minute walk. Mile 2 also went by very quickly but I knew this was going to be a long race, 26.2 miles after all! If I wanted to finish, I better stick with my plan. So reluctantly, I took about a 50 second walk break and continued on. I'm not sure when exactly the dirt roads started (mile 3, mile 4???) but I rather enjoy running on the dirt road. There were some areas with loose dirt/sand but it was mostly shaded. I ran some parts of the race by myself and had 2 other runners pass me. I was glad they passed me because I could hear them talking and I like the solitude. I listed to my music with one ear bud and taking in the scenery. At that point, I was enjoying the running, the experience. Back on the road, I had to cross over to the other road. There were several people standing around chatting and no one bothered to look up or direct traffic. There was no traffic anyways so I continued on. I must admit I was annoyed by this. I continued on and made my way to my first water stop. The people were nice and I thanked them for the water. Around this time, I met up with another runner we chatted on and off for a while before he eventually passed me. Being out on the open roads, there were no shades and it was hot, hot, hot! Also, the gnats were terrible. They would literally swarm around me!! I had never experienced that before. For the next 5 miles maybe, it was a solitary race. I could now see 2 other runners way ahead of me.

I did start to feel better about the race. The people at the water stops were friendly and nice. (Some even filled my water bottles for me, offering me GU and fruit). Law enforcement, race personnel and other drivers checking on me, waving, beeping and giving me the thumbs up. Around mile 17 or 18, the heat finally hit me. I was able to catch up to one of the runners. For the next several miles, it was great to have another runner there! I think the heat was getting to him too). My legs were starting to cramp and I worry I would have a repeat performance like my first half marathon. (flash back to my first half marathon: running great until mile 7 and calf cramp. Bad!!! I could not run at all not even to cross the finish line). Panic did set in. I took out my biofreeze and rubbed them on both of my calves. It felt better and I was able to run some. I remembered later, being stopped at the railroad tracks to wait for the train to go by. One of the race staff (in his car) handed me a powerade. I was happy to accept it. I know, don't try anything new on race day but with the calf cramp and heat, I took it. I dranked some and I waited (along with my fellow runner) for the train to pass. It was a great excuse to rest! When the train passed, I did not want to liter so I asked the police officer if I could give him my powerade bottle. I tried to run some more and later, my other calf started to cramp up! Not good. I rubbed more biofreeze on my calves. At the next water stop, I poured water on my arms and legs and I felt better. I was able to run a little more. During these miles, it was nice to get encouragement from the other runner and we chatted about our families. We had some things in common and I talked about my daughter. I think talking about her gave me the strength to continue on. I looked at my watch and I knew I had if I stayed at it, I could still complete this marathon within the 5 1/2 hours. I started to run again, if only for a minute and walked. I continued on like this and kept going. I eventually passed another runner. Ok, for the record he was walking. He too was suffering from cramping. (I did offer him my biofreeze). I was thrilled to see a sign for mile 25! Finally mile 26, with 2 very enthusiastic girls working the water booth. On my last mile, a runner passed me...it seemed like out of no where! One last hill to go (ugh) but then I see a sign to turn onto a dirt/grass road. Yes, I am close I see the trailed taped off by ribbons and I hear cow bells. Crossing the finish line and I said Thank God, I'm finished! A wonderful lady gave me water and sat me in a chair in front of the fan. She then gave me a cold wet paper towel. Someone else came over and helped me fill out my place card. A big thank you ladies!!!!

Some things I wanted to add. There were very few spectators but I really enjoyed reading the race signs placed along the way. I looked forward to reading them during the race. Despite my initial reaction, this was a very friendly race with great support from race staff, law enforcement and emergency response. It turned out to be a great experience. I was able to catch a shuttle back to my car shortly after finishing the race. I was eager to make the drive home.

When I got home, hubby had water ready for me n the juuzzi tub and I got a nice message afterwards. I also got a beautiful card from my daughter and hubby.

It is now Thursday and I am fully recovered? My quads were hurting for several days and my lower back was also sore but by Wednesday, I was feeling much better. I am also ready to sign up for my next marathon. I am thinking in November, I will run another marathon!

Final thoughts. Training: I have trained on running mostly 3 days a week. Mainly because of injury (Achilles) but for my next race I would like to train 4 days. I think on my next marathon, I will follow Hal Hidgon's plan more closely but still incorporate walk breaks. I think I am less sore because of the walk breaks. For hydration, I may try something different. Instead of Nunn, try tailwind. I like the thought of not having to carry GU and blok. Not sure how I would avoid the cramping but maybe tailwind will help with that. I would keep up the carbo loading the week before the race and maybe more gatorade week before race. Music or no music? Though I always trained with music, during this race I wore1 earbud and last 5 miles without.... I was surprised I could run without music!

That's it, a very long race race report with all my thoughts. I am sooo proud of myself. To have a goal (a hard goal) and achieve it. Completing a marathon is hard, it is both mental and physical and I dd it! I am proud. I look forward to my next marathon and I hope to better my time!
I picked this marathon because at the time it was the one closest to home (ok still at a 5-6 hour drive), small but established race and a beautiful scenic route. Upon further research, the course is extremely tough course with evelation of +-1400 feet! Yikes. I think my comprehension increased even further after running my last (hilly) half marathon. Looking around at marathon schedules, I recently found an inaugural race closer to home. It would be a 2 hour drive with rolling hills vs.running up a mountain. Again, I found myself at the same crossroads as to which race to do like my first half marathon. After much debate, I decided to stay with my original plan. After all, I had already paid my entry fee! For a week, I felt good about sticking to my plan...but yet there was still that nagging doubt in the back of my head. After last week's long run of approx. 19 miles, all the doubts came creeping in. Was I making the right decision? After all, running 26.2 is hard. Do I want to make it even harder by running a super tough course? I believe I could do it but will I have a good experience? Will I finished before the cut off time? Am I setting myself up for failure? Poor hubby, had to hear once again about my doubts. He is good like that, listening with patience and always, a voice of reason. So once again, I am changing my plans. I have decided to run the marathon closer to home. I have paid for my entry fee and the new hotel reservation is made. I am feeling much more at ease and I know this is the best choice for me. I can go into this marathon with a more relaxed mind set. Just run this marathon to complete it (hey, course is open for 8 hours)!!! It's point to point which I like...I like the unknown instead of dreading "that hill" on the way back and best of all, it's only about a 2 hour drive. On top of that I have another week more to train. This is the winner. I know the other marathon will be added to my bucket list. When I become more confident at running marathons, I know I will want to tackle that mountain and conquer it!

I am still trying to tweek my diet, for optional performance. I have been feeling more tired lately and low energy. I am trying to add more carbs, yeah pasta to keep my energy level up during training runs. I still have to decide if I want to carry any electrolyte or water on my run. I have however, found what works for me in terms of fueling during a race, (GU) is best. It's all still so new! Surprisingly, several of the halfs I did, I did not bring any fuel or water. I found that I did not need it and the water stops along the way was sufficient to finish the race. (Everyone is different so find what works best for you and stick with it during race day).

With Hubby's insane work schedule, I have had almost no free time. I am soooo looking forward to some me time! I am ready to start a knitting project, go shopping, running (without pressing for time)!!! I can't really complain too much though....Life IS good.Jasmine's Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05038399448392906657noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7855834047788158276.post-6346006271352660642015-03-08T07:36:00.001-07:002015-03-08T08:03:27.393-07:00My 5th Half-Marathon Completed Yesterday, I ran in a half marathon. This was the 5th half marathon I completed since September. I first embarked on my half marathon training in June after completing a 10k.

The past 2 half marathon races have been great races. I went into the races feeling very calm and have done well in both races. I must admit that I have gotten too relax in my training routine because I got too comfortable. I have been keeping up with the "running" part but everything else I neglected. Running a race also requires mental training. I have been neglecting that along with being too relaxed on my vitamin/supplement and getting acupuncture treatments for my injured Achilles. (Not everyone requires the last part but for me it is a vital part to keeping me healthy).

I have been comprehensive about this upcoming race. It is a small semi-local race. It is a Run for Christ series and I have enjoyed running these races. (They are small races but well organized). My comprehension about running this race is that 1/3 of the race has hills, lots of hills. Ugh! Also my last long training run of 3 hours of approx 18 miles was the toughest run ever (or so it seems). Anyways, I have not been running my best these past few weeks.

On race day, packet pick up was a breeze. At 8:30, I was lined up at the start line (4 mile, 8 mile and half all started at the same time). I did not warm up or stretch a lot before hand so I was a bit stiff for the first 1/2 mile. The first 2 miles went okay and at miles 3 to 4 it was hilly. Mile 6 and 7 were challenging with even more hills. Around mile 7 was the turn around and I was not looking forward to the (more) hills on the second half of the race. I regret not taking more walk breaks during the first half of the race because I found the second half of the race to be very challenging. I didn't have as much energy and I felt I ran at a much slower pace. I just wanted to be done with the race! I did however, kicked it in on the last 50 yards. Overall, my time was about 8 minutes slower than my previous 2 races.

I'm glad I did the race. It is a good experience for the marathon I am training for in May. There will be lots of hills! Next time, I need to stick to my plan, that means walk breaks, at least stop for water at every water station ~ every 2 miles. Don't let my ego get in the way, and run smarter. Stick to my training regime, all aspect of it!

That's it, keep up my training and keep prepare for my marathon in May!!!!
The second one ever! My training for this next half marathon is so different from my first. I am training smarter, hydrating more and I will eat better this time.

My last long run was on Thursday of around 9 miles. Yesterday, I ran 60 minutes on the treadmill at a steady good pace with no walk breaks. I will probably run another 30 minutes in the treadmill today. I will finish my training with 2 more runs on the treadmill of 30 minutes each before my race.

I am feeling physically good this morning. I have no pain in my feet! I am so thrilled. I think a combination of things attributed to this pain free morning! The CEP 2.0 running compression socks I wore during my run, the stretching and acupuncture treatments.

I'm going to keep a positive attitude this week and next time blog more about my training regime and the race itself.

In between training, teaching and cooking, I also found time to knit. This week I finished my sweater I had been working on to wear during my race weekend. This sweater was very challenging for me starting out but I was determined to get it done. Once I figured out the right stitch placements and how to do the right/left lifts correctly, the sweater became much easier to knit. The sweater is called Bloomsbury and I purchased the pattern from Ravelry.

Pictures of front and back. I love the sleeves and the laces in the back. What a beautiful design!
It was a late start and I arrived there around 1:30pm. The place was super crowded so I picked up mostly essentials, few Asian vegetables, pho soup broth, etc. I had to finish my trip with a stop to the bakery for my boba tea and pastry. To my surprise, my favorite bakery was open. I think it is called the Hong Kong Bakery located in the Asian Square. It is a small bakery down from the Sweet Hut. I purchased some fresh (and very delicious) pastry then I stopped by the Sweet Hut for some Boba Tea and Thai tea. It was a good way to finish the trip. It was a long car ride (over 4 hours round trip) but well worth it. Here is what I bought from the bakery:

This is my first full week back into half marathon training. I am still not at 100% so I want to ease back gently into my training. Friday is suppose to be my long run day of 6 miles. By the time I got to the trail, it had turned into a cloudy humid day. At mile 1, I was not feeling it at all. It had been a super stressful day and I did not want to run. I made it for a few laps and finally called it before mile 3. It was frustrating and when I have really bad running days like this, I wonder if I should stop running all togetherness, not run the half in November. I was in full feeling sorry for myself mode. Besides, my heel was slightly hurting. I ended up taking Saturday off and today, I resumed my training. Sometimes I just need some time to get a new perspective. Today, (no sitter) I had to do my run on the treadmill and decided to aim for 6 miles again. I set the incline to 1 and went to running. First 3 miles were a little bit of a struggle but mile 4 felt good. Around mile 5, I was having to push myself to keep going. Sometimes, those voices want me to just quit and walk! Not today!!!! I was able finish my run at a consistent pace without any walk breaks. This has been my longest run since my last race. I want to continue increasing my long runs by 1 mile per week until race week. That's about 5 or 6 weeks away. I figure if I can run 10 or 11 miles by then, I won't have any trouble finishing the half... I am trying to be real careful about not overdoing it and getting hurt.

I recently purchased a pair of compression socks. I have noticed a few runners wearing them at races but I have never owned a pair. I think with my Achilles/heel/foot/calf issues I recently encountered, I am willing to trying anything. The compression socks were costly but I wanted to give them a try. I opted for the CEP 2.0 compression socks. I wasn't sure if I would like them but when I put them on, it felt good. It could feel the extra cushion on the bottom of my feet and the compression on my Achilles and calf. I think I will probably wear them during my race! I have also ordered a pair of heel lift and I am looking forward to trying them too.

My last run was at the half marathon. I have been letting my Achilles heal getting daily acupuncture treatment and taking herbal medicine to repair it. It helps to have a family member who is licensed Both in Acupuncture and herbal medicine! I have been taking it easy for some time now, even before my half marathon race. My Achilles has not been hurting and I was going to take a few months off. After talking with hubby, he suggested I go for a run and see how it feels. Makes sense to me, especially since he is the one who is the voice of reason and has lots of knowledge on sports injury.

This afternoon, I set out for my favorite running trail. I wanted to run 4 miles, if possible and see how it goes. I didn't want to get injured so I set out at an easy pace. I actually felt good during the first 2 miles. It felt great to run again. After mile 2, I took a short 1 minute walk break and resumed my running. Mile 3 and 4 also went well and I finished at about 4.65 miles according to my runkeeper. Taking 2 more 1 minute walk breaks before I was finished. My Achilles felt fine after my run. I am hoping tomorrow it will still be feeling good, that will be the true test. I have been icing it, just in case. I'll just have to wait to see how it feels tomorrow! It's nice to feel hope again that I may be able to run my half marathon in November! If I do, I will train smarter this time and not over train!

My crochet/knitting has been on the back burner since I've been concentrating on running. The crochet top, "In The Shade" has been on hold for a while. I started this crochet top in late July. I think I also got bored with the pattern. Yesterday, I decided to finish the last few row. It is now complete! Here it is:

I completed my first half marathon last Saturday and I am now finally ready to blog about my experience.

I had been looking forward to my first half marathon for so long so when the day became closer, I found that I was not as excited about it. On Friday, I was driving to the expo. I arrived in Peachtree City around 4 pm, picked up my packet and looked around the expo. I purchased a handana and a pair of super light glasses. Next was check in and I was disappointed to find out the hotel may not have enough shuttle to race site in the morning because they did not know they were suppose to provide this service. It was disappointing and so after settling in, I went to find where the race shuttle site was and pick up dinner. By the time I returned to the hotel with my dinner, it was after 8:00. It was way later than I wanted to eat. I did not get any chance to buy snacks or water for the morning.

That night, I tossed and turned. I did not get any sleep! I think I was too nervous and not to mention dehydrated. I had not hydrated well in the last few days like I should of. The wake up call was set for 4 am but I was already up. I got ready and I was out the door around 5. On the way to my car, the hotel shuttle was there and I decided to take the shuttle at the last minute. I had wanted to wear my other sneakers because the pair I was wearing felt lose. (I had just gotten them on Thursday and I only ran 1 mile in them). Once on the shuttle, everyone seemed confused to where the start was. Fortunately, it was the right place. Arriving so early (5:30), I had so much time. Around 7:05, I decided to make the last port-a-potty run before my race starts at 7:30 since I was in the first corral. I was shocked in a matter of minutes, how long the lines were. Everyone had the same idea. Anyways, by the time, I was in the starting line, I had literally 2 minutes before the start!

On that Saturday, it was still unusually humid and warm for September. Normally, September is when it cools off but this week has been hot and humid!

I was set to run in the first group. I was surprised that I was not nervous at all. The first few miles, I ran at a good pace, not going out too fast. I took my energy gel at mile 3. Around mile 5, I could feel the fatigue start to set in. Mile 5 and 6 were tough, which is surprising because miles 3 to 6 are usually my best miles. The course turned out to be quite hilly, unlike what was described, as flat and fast. It was not flat! At mile 7, I was on track to meet my time for the half. That's when I was in trouble. I tried to run about 10 steps and my calf muscle would tighten up. Every time I attempted to run, it would tighten up and give out. I was worried that I would not be able to walk. I attempted to stretch a few times and even started to drink Gatorade at the water stops but it didn't help. It was frustrating knowing that I would have to walk for the rest of the race. The spectators on the course were supportive and I wish that I could of kept running. I was so happy to see the finish line and I wished that I could of run it in but I knew I couldn't. I was greatful that I was able to cross the finish line without myAchilles giving out but I wish that I was able to run most of the course. My time was disappointing, under 3 hours. Yes, I finished and completed my first half marathon but I was so disappointed with myself. I was fighting too many battles, both mental and physical...

Back at the hotel, I had realized that I needed to turn this negative attitude around and focus on the positive and what I learned. I learned so many lessons that I would not otherwise have learned. Here are some of the key things I learned. Not necessarily in this order: I needed to have a positive attitude and make sure mentally I am prepared for the race, to not get distracted. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate days before the race and especially the night before! Yes, I read this and I was told to hydrate but I didn't. Make sure to eat enough calories and carb load a few days ahead of time. Bring water and snacks with me for the trip, don't count on getting it the day before the race in a new town. Get to expo and eat early so I can relax and unwind. Don't wear new sneakers the day of the race. Again, I read this, don't try anything new on race day! So true!

I remember thinking that I would not do this race again next year but after a few days, I realized that I want and will do this race again next year. Redemption, to do it right and to conquer the hills! So for now, I will rest my Achilles and look forward to when I can once again run and get back to running!

My Achilles have been feeling better and I woke up with no pain. Ok, pain in my quads from 50 minutes on the exercise bike yesterday. It finally came in yesterday!!!! Anyways, I was feeling good so I decided to do a longer run on the treadmill. I rubbed in some absorbing jr, and taped my Achilles with KT tape and set out to do my run. No incline on the treadmill and at a speed slightly slower than normal. The first 3 miles went well and I walked for a minute after each mile. At 3.5 miles, I was feeling good and I continue to feel good all the way to the end. After 3.5 miles, I again decrease the speed (a little) and continue to run for approx a mile and walk a minute. When the Achilles were feeling slightly tight, I'd run for 5 minutes and walk for 30 seconds before resuming my run. Overall, I felt great and no real pain on my Achilles. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Before my Achilles got bad last time, I had a great run and paid for it the next day....so time will tell and I'm hoping I don't wake up with pain tomorrow!!! Either way, I'm still going to take it easy and not over do it before the half marathon.... I just did not want to go a month running at a low mileage every week and worry about my endurance for the race. Now having done 10 miles, I can feel good about it.

Yesterday, I decided that I was going to book the hotel room for another night. Originally, I had planned on coming home after the race. With check out at 11:00, it would not leave me little time to get back to the hotel for check out. To eliminate the stress, I am staying another night. This way, I can enjoy the race and post race activities and not have to worry about rushing back. I will now have plenty of time to take a shower and ice down my Achilles and take a nap afterwards, if necessary! Perhaps a bit of sight seeing and maybe the after party that night. We'll see! I'm glad it's coming together. I want to make this event as stress free as possible and really have a fun and rewarding experience. 2 weeks...yikes! I can't wait:)
I am making spicy tuna rolls for dinner. I still need to prepare the crab meat but that can wait. I am actually feeling good right now. I hope I'm not being delusional but my swelling on the Achillies looking better and I'm not feeling any pain. It felt good walking on it. I have been keeping asorbine jr. on it most of the time. I have been going easy on my training and took Tuesday off.

I purchased a new pair of sneakers last week. The current pair I am wearing is not that old, maybe 3 months but I have run in the rain with them several times so I was concerned about the padding. It is a good thing I took a closer look because the outer edges are worn. I also looked at the other pair of sneakers I purchased several months back and they too seemed worn. It's weird because I ran in them a few times on training and once in a 5k race. I purchased them on line and honestly, I wasn't happy with that particular pair of shoes but I didn't want to deal with the hassle of sending them back. In hind sight, I should if sent them back. Next time, I will know better!

Today, I decided to do a light taping on Achilles before my run. I did 40 minutes on the treadmill, again at only a slightly slower pace and no incline, it still feels weird to run with no incline because I have run for so many years on a 3.5 incline and I wonder why I have Achilles pain! To not further aggregate the leg, I took many short walk breaks. It was a good run and no pain when I was done. I still iced it for 20 minutes afterwards. So far so good and I hope it will continue to improve. Again, I hope I am fooling myself but I want to be happy and not depressed about the injury. I am again getting excited about the race which is only 17 days away!!!! Yeah!!:)

My exercise bike should be here tomorrow so I'll be able to do some cross training.

I'll keep posting about my training and progress on my blog!

Jasmine's Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05038399448392906657noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7855834047788158276.post-15515958570632585862014-08-18T09:55:00.000-07:002014-08-18T10:00:48.898-07:00Update on my half marathon trainingI had a great run last Tueaday. After running for 30 minutes on the treadmill, I decided to run the other 30 minutes on the road. Instead of going to the trails, I ran by the house. There are lots of rolling hills. I felt very strong and ran at a great pace and finished strong. To my surprise and anguish, my Achilles hurt the next day and in fact my right Achillies were swollen. Not good. I am about 3 weeks away from my half marathon and I do not want to think about not running, let alone my Achillies blowing out and I won't be able to walk. What a nightmare. Not being able to do something I love. I didn't think I love running but when faced with the possibility of taking time off or not being able to run again, I realize how much I do love running....

It has been hard taking 5 days off. I have been icing my Achilles a lot and putting absorbing jr. on it. It's amazing the emotions I have been through these last 5 days. Mostly anger, sadness, denial, etc... My Achilles started to feel a lot better on the 3 day and there was very little pain.... Maybe I am in denial but I am still planning on running my first half marathon in September. After that, I will see if I am able to do the 2nd half marathon I signed up for in November.

There is so many reasons why I want to run this half marathon in September. It's my first half marathon after all. After all these years of running 5ks, I finally got the courage to train for a half. I have also made the hotel reservation and my MIL will be here from up north to run in the race series. I need the short vacation! Not to mention, training hard...maybe over training! So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to run in the race. Okay, run/walk/run. I will not have the time I want to finish in but my goal has shifted to just finishing the race because of my injury.

I did return to my training today. Of course, my training is at a much easier level. I did a total of 30 minutes on the treadmill with short walk breaks. Weird to run on the treadmill with no incline, I have never done that...and at a slightly slower pace. I didn't want to push my luck so we'll see. I hope the Achilles will be okay tomorrow (fingers crossed, no pain hopefully). I will really be cutting down on my mileage until the half. I ordered my exercise bike (will be here Thursday) so I'm hoping to do some major cross training on it for endurance, instead of going for the long runs. Let's hope it's enough for me to finish the race amd cross the finish line.

Jasmine's Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05038399448392906657noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7855834047788158276.post-86404530301135508182014-08-09T11:10:00.000-07:002014-08-09T11:27:35.732-07:00Training day: long runI have been running off and on since high school. I ran on my high school track team...not that I was an exceptional runner. It has always been ingrained in me not to walk. Walking was quitting and I have always believed this...until recently. When I signed up for the half marathon, I had called someone who I knew ran half marathons. She told me about Jeff Galloway and his run/walk/run method. I told her "I just can't walk." Well, dispute my self I still ended up buying a few of his e-books and a hard cover book. I still like having the book in my hands...I'm old fashion like that! I talked to hubby about this walking thing and he said it made sense to him and Jeff Galloway is an Olympian.

I have been training for my half marathon with walk breaks. Not necessary to the extent he has suggested in his book but when I am tired or on a big hill, I will take a 30 seconds to 1 minute break, if necessary. Yes, I do feel better afterwards and my running seems better.

Today, was my long training run. 12 laps, with each lap being over a mile. It was a cloudy day but humid. My water bottle leaked and left my shorts wet. Yuck! The first mile turned out to be challenging and I found myself taking several walk breaks and I wonder how I was going to finish my 12+ miles and if my time was going to really slow! The first 3 miles were overall challenging. Around mile 4, I had a GU energy gel. I had purchased a few boxes with different flavor and I must admit I enjoy the salted caramel flavor! Yes, it actually tasted like caramel. The next 3 miles went better. Mile 7 was a bit tough and I tried to say my mantra, smooth and easy. It did help. After mile 8, I told myself only 4 more miles. I can do it. I realized around mile 10, I was kind of in the zone (not that I was feeling energetic or anything) but my feet kept moving! It turned out to be one of my better miles. I have only 2+ miles to go! The last mile or so went well since I knew the end was in sight! I must admit that I was very excited to be done. According to my runkeeper, 12.85 miles! Yeah, I decided not to push myself any further, though if I had to, I could of keep running until 13.1... I was drenched from my run but it was great to finish and stop running :). As it turned out, even with all the walk breaks, my time was 15 second faster per mile than my long run last Friday!!!!

On the drive home, I did wonder if I was crazy to want to run a half marathon...but then I realize no, I'm not. I feel a sense of accomplishment! I feel good about myself. It's good to have a goal to work towards. I think that makes makes me grow as a person.

It felt great to get home, soak in the tub and ice down my Achilles. Goal accomplished and less than 30 days to half mararthon race!Jasmine's Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05038399448392906657noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7855834047788158276.post-69718165096439188532014-08-01T17:58:00.000-07:002014-08-01T18:13:52.317-07:00Training update and crochet too

I didn't blog anything last week. I did all my runs on the treadmill last week. 4 training runs, with Monday and Tuesday running for total of 90 minutes each day with 1.5 incline. On Thursday and Saturday, 60 minutes each day and 1.5 incline. No long run last week...tapering off a bit to give the legs a rest. This week, I have already completed my runs for the week. 50 minutes on the treadmill each day on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Today, I did my long run outdoors at the trails. (Today was my best bet to get my trail run, otherwise I would have to do the long run on the treadmill tomorrow)....

It was much cooler today but humid. The weather cooperated and I did not get rained on! I was able to run my furthest to date of over 11.5 miles! The first mile started out good. I have been going without my energy drink and energy candy for the last week or so because they were making me sick, od on caffeine! I was getting tired at mile 2 and I wonder if it was because I was not running on fresh legs, having run 3 days in a row or/and the negative messages. Anyways, I waited until mile 3 to take my energy gel. Mile 4 was a bit of a struggle but I felt better running miles 5 and 6. At mile 6, I had another energy gel. I was thinking of the comic by oatmeal while I was eating my energy gel and it made me laugh and gave me energy to keep going! I break the run up into 3 mile increments, which makes it more manageable in my head...I read in one of the blogs how it helps to break the miles up so it's not so overwhelming. Around mile 6, I was thinking no problem, only another 3 miles then 2 more, I can do it! My arms are more relaxed and I actually have a better running form. Then I started to get more tired around miles 7 and 8 and I took some 30 second and 1 mile walk breaks. Mile 10 and 11 were a little harder and I try think of some mantra in my head, "I have a lot of endurance", "smooth and easy", etc... The last mile was tiring but having to get around some walkers, I actually picked up the pace to get around them! I was so happy to finally be done and stop running! Of course, it was a great accomplishment but I am glad to be done with the run!

I have been using my runkeeper to keep track of my distance. I really like the app in that I can see how fast I run every mile and my total distance. The last mile, the app stopped so I had to restart the last mile.

When I got home, I took a nice bath and iced down my Achilles. After a nice meal, I am feeling better, back to normal. I'm not sure if I will get another short run in on Sunday or call it good for the week. I am kind of excited it's August because September is my FIRST half marathon. :)

Now onto my crafts! I had to put my crochet top on hold. After getting 3/4 of the front done, the top is going to be too big so I started on another top, called "in the shade". It is also a crochet pattern and I have completed the upper front and back portion. Hopefully, I will be motivated to work on the top this weekend.
I try to increase my running mileage by one mile per week. Last week I ran 9.5 miles so today, I ran about 10.5 miles.

I had originally planned on getting up super early and be finished by 8am. When I woke up around 6, I could hear the rain. I decided to sleep in a little longer. By 8:00, I was ready to get up and get ready until my daughter said "I want pancakes"! Just hearing her beautiful voice ask for it, how could I not make them for her? After making them, I got ready for my run and I noticed it had started to rain again, a brief thought occur to me to skip my run but I was going anyways. I won't be able to run next Saturday because hubby has a competition so I better do it today, stick to the plan! When I arrived at the trails, I noticed very few cars. Yes, it's later than usual, after 9:30 and rainy, I saw a familiar face starting out. The rain steadily fell and at times, poured but I was determined to finish my whole run. First 3 miles were a bit tough. I felt stiff and my Achilles was hurting a bit. Mile 4 and 5 felt better. I was getting into the rhythm. Mile 5 was a good time to take my energy gel so I could keep my energy up for the later miles. Around mile 6, it started to pour. I thought about calling it good enough but I continued to run. I finished the last mile at a decent enough pace and felt good I did it. The rain even stopped! I went back to take a picture of one of the puddles I ran through.

Unfortunately, no pace and exact mileage of today's run. I must had hit the button to stop the running app during my run.

Once home, I soaked in the tub for a while before finally getting food to eat.

It was a good day, I am a Runner and I feel good. :)
A light weight training workout and no running...in anticipation of my long run tomorrow of 10+ miles. There will hopefully be good things to blog about tomorrow after my long training run :)

Yesterday, I ran for 80 minutes on the treadmill. A good deal of my runs are done on the treadmill because of convenience and sometimes just life circumstances. Sometimes, I have to push through those thoughts in my head that makes me want to quit. I was able to push through them and have a good run at my usual pace. I feel so accomplished!

Today, I decided to do something else that I enjoy....cooking...baking! I have been wanting to try out something I found on pinterest. Recently, I found Nutella (again...I remember having it long ago). I spread the Nutella over fresh dough then cut and braid! It looks complicated but it couldn't be easier. With the left over dough, I made hubby's favorite, calzones with meat and cheese. The house smells great! Here's a picture before it went into the oven:

In between going shopping (wanting more running clothes) and taking my daughter swimming, I have been crocheting on my pineapple top. I am a bit concerned about the sizing but I am going to keep going until I get the whole pineapple motif done. I'll decide then if I can make this top fit or if it will be way too big. Wish me luck!

It's been 3 years since I posted on my blog and recently, I decided to revive my blog! I am still knitting and crocheting but just not at the speed in which I use to. Life has gotten much busier with me being a full time teacher to my daughter, training for my first half marathon and finding my love for sewing! Oh yeah, and my addiction to candy crush!

Lately, my mind has been focused on running. I eat, breath and think about running a lot. It is nice to have a new goal to work for! My last race was in June, the 10k Torture Trail run. I have been running for most of my life but started running regularly again 3 or 4 years ago, mainly 5k. I was

nervous about this race because I have not been running the longer distance and the hills! I am happy to say that I did well and felt strong enough to sprint to the finish. 3rd place for my age group. Look at my beautiful hand made stain glass award. After the race, I decided it was time to proceed with my new goal of training for a half marathon. (It has been my dream to run the New York City Marathon)!!!! Since then, I have been increasing my mileage every week to get ready for my first half marathon in September, Run like a Diva Half Marathon. Next time, I will blog more about my training.

My latest knit project is the Icarus top (above). This is the first item I finished in a while. It was a fun top to knit with the right amount of lace. I had some trouble with the sleeves so it was heavily modified to fit me. My only complaint was the 1 ball of yarn that was a different shade of orange. ...

At times, I feel a bit unproductive because I do not have a project on hand so today, I started a crochet top. It is not really a pattern but a chart of the top. I always love pineapple tops so I really wanted to make this. The chart does not come with any other information so I am hoping that a fingering yarn on a size c hook will fit me. I hope to finish this by September so I can wear it at the expo before my race!
I have finished a few big projects since my last post but today's blog will be about cooking. Lately, I have been doing alot of authentic cooking. I think it started off with wanting to make some chinese curry pastry and that has snowballed into so much more. I have made steam pork buns, egg rolls, braised tofu, stir fry eggplant, braised eggs w/ beef, red bean filled mochi, soybean sprout side dish and radish salad.

Here are some great sites I found for authentic asian cooking: http://www.maangchi.com/, angiesrecipes.blogspot.com, onlinehome.us/taiwanesecooking/site, en.petitchef.com, and the you tube video "How to Make Mochi" in 30 minutes or less by Intelliot. Thanks to all these great sites and video.

After making all these dishes, I had a sudden craving for my aunt's Taiwanese ba-wan (meatball). Because I live so far away from a large asian community I have to make most of the food myself. Getting some of the ingredients were tricky such as the potato flour. After a few failed attempted to find the right flour, I ended up buying it on line. When the flour arrived, I was so excited to make it. My first experience was a disaster where the skin did not get hard.

My aunt had heard about my disaster and called me to give me a few pointers. She does not use "sweet potato" flour. Yes, potato flour and sweet potato flour are not the same. Instead, she said she uses tapioca flour. Great, tapioca flour is more accessible for me to get. (I discovered that there was a small asian market an hour away vs. the 2 hour drive to the larger asian market).

I purchased several bags of tapioca flour yesterday so I was ready to try again. After cooking up my ingredients, I was ready to make the meat ball again. This time, I thought I would only make 2 at a time to ensure the skin would get hard. The skin on these 2 ba-wan was much harder so I proceeded to make 4 more. I later realize that the skin was not quite hard enough and added 2 more cups of tapioca to the mix. The 3rd batch was better but after trying to remove the ba-wan from the bowl, it still fell apart. To my disappointment and 4-5 hours of work, I tossed the remaining batter and all but the last of the ba wan I made. I was discouraged.

This morning, I decided I will make only half the batch. I still have plenty of meat filling left so why not? One last try. Previously, I had been using the "glutious" rice flour but this time, I used "Mochiko" sweet rice flour. 1/2 cup of it with 2 cups of water. I brought it to a boil, stirring constantly. It gets to be very thick after a few minutes. I turned off the heat and added 2 cups of tapioca starch. The mixture gets to be very thick (see tip below). I then spread some on the bottom of the bowl, add meat filling, spread more mixture on top and steam for 10 minutes! Success at last :).

Here are the lessons I learned:

1. Use Mochiko sweet rice flour. It makes a big difference, not glutious rice flour in the green package.

2. The consistency has to be thick. How thick? Thick to where it's getting hard to stir. It's sticky yet thick. Harder than new playdo. Almost like dough, thick yet still pliable.

3. Water works wonders! A. When assembling, you can even spread this mixture using your fingers and water! It really keeps it from sticking. B. Let the ba-wan cool after cooking and loosen with a butter knife. Add a bunch of water to it and it will loosen up, come right out of the bowl without falling apart. What a great trick I learned! (Don't worry about adding too much water to the mixture, go ahead add water! It comes right off the ba-wan).

There you go, after much help from my cousin (Debbie), my aunt, countless website (some mentioned above), research and experiment, my ba-wan is a success. If I had known those 3 little things tips, it would of made it a lot easier. But would I had learned all these great lessons?

I hope these tips will be helpful to someone who is making this delicious dish! Sorry, I did not post the recipe.

My ba-wan without sauce:

I thought I would also post a picture of my mochi w/ red bean paste. Has it been that long? Trying to find a pattern that I like and using yarn in my stash, makes it harder to find the "right" project.

The picovoli top is knitted on a much smaller needle than I'm use to, size 4. I made 1 slight modification which was to add about 8-9 rows to length the top. I opted to do the picot edging along the neckline only. I didn't like how it curled up. I also liked how the designer had added waist and hip shaping which gave it a really good fit. The cotton/linen blend yarn gives this top some ease that is needed! Overall, this was a very satisfying knit. Fast and easy to follow. I'm happy with this project. It's nice to finally finish a project and have it fit! :)

Here's a photo:

Since I'm feeling good about finishing this top, I've started on another project called the Olivia top. I'm a bit comprehensive because my last top from the same designer didn't turn out well. I really like her simple designs so I thought I give it try at another pattern. A big plus was the pattern was only $1! This time, the top is knitted in a fingering yarn on a size 7 needle! I have some fingering yarn in my stash so why not? Surprisingly, it's knitting up relatively fast - I have the first 7 rows of ribbing done and now I've done 5 sets of increases so it's going well. This project will be a good project to knit since it's mostly stockingnette stitch (again). I do love cables and lace but it's so time consuming, not to mention I really have to concentrate on what I'm doing.

There was another road race this weekend but I didn't run in it. I actually trying to set a goal for myself! I think I always had a goal but it was just to finish the race and maybe place in my age group. Now, I have a "plan" where I'm actually training. This includes doing speed workouts, lengthening my stride, long(er) runs, etc. I hope to really cut down my time, My next race will be on 4th of July.

I hope all the dad's out there have a Happy Father's Day!

Jasmine's Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05038399448392906657noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7855834047788158276.post-41233861249914021642011-06-14T18:36:00.000-07:002015-03-08T08:12:02.649-07:00Second Road Race (in A long time)This has already been a busy week so far but things are settling down.

I ran my second road race this past Saturday. (Not the second race ever but in a long time). The race was held in another town in conjunction with a Festival. I was excited to participate in another race and I hoped to run with a large group of runners. This year, there was also another race on the same day so the numbers of runners were down from last year. There were less than 200 runners that participated in this run. The race started at 7:30am so I had to be up around 4:30am. At 11:00pm the night before, I was still trying to download songs to my ipod for my race! Talk about last minute! At 5am, I was out the door and I stopped at the local walmart to buy an armband to hold my ipod. Yes, I'm a procrastinator but I got everything done and I made it to the starting time in plenty of time! It was nice to run in much cooler temperature and the course was relatively flat, with a few slight inclines. Running with headphones help me maintain my pace and also help to motivate me. I was able to run a minute faster than the last race! To my surprise, I did place 2nd in my age group. This is one time that I'm happy to say that there's an advantage to aging... I came home proudly holding my trophy!
Because it's been a busy week, I have not been doing a lot of knitting. My latest project is a top that I can actually wear in this 100 degree weather. This top is from the pattern called Picovoli (Knotions.com). It's knitted on a size 4 needle using a DK cotton. I happen to have 4 skeins of the CotLin yarn from Knit Picks that I've been saving so it worked out well. Hopefully, that will be enough yarn to finish this top. Here's what I've done so far:
I'm sad to say that my last, the Kourtney top is in the scrap pile! My short rows for the arm straps came out all wrong and therefore ended up way too long! I attempted to correct this problem but then I realized that I wouldn't be happy with the fit anyways. The top was too big and it just didn't look good on me! Hopefully, I'll find another project to put the yarn to good use.Jasmine's Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05038399448392906657noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7855834047788158276.post-28638083039021095002011-06-04T02:32:00.000-07:002011-06-04T03:17:01.112-07:00Road Race Report
Last night I ran in a road race, the first one in a very long time. It seems that around every April, I get interested in running again. It's probably because of the Freihofer's Run for Women. It's a big race that held annually in Albany, New York. The race is actually today. I've ran in this race several times, starting in my early 20's. Unfortunately this year, I wasn't able to make the race so instead I opted for a more locally run race, hence yesterday's race. I knew that I wouldn't be able to make a race today (lack of baby sitter) so a Friday race seemed like a good solution.

Surprising, I wasn't really that nervous....not until an hour before the race. I left at 6pm and arrived around 6:40, giving me enough time to pick up my packet and get to the starting line at 7pm. It was a good turnout, maybe 200 runners. (I'm still waiting for the race result to be posted to get an exact count).

It was a really hot evening. Even at 7pm, it was still in the 90s. High temps for Friday was around 100 degrees. As I was running, I was thinking to myself why did I do an evening race? It was so hot! I imagine, a lot of the other runners were thinking the same thing!

I had a few goals. The foremost, is to finish the race. Finish at a respectable time and I hope to place 1st in my age group. Okay, I had really high expectations for someone who just started running in late April and I've only been running 2 miles instead of the 3.1 miles. I figure my chances of placing (for my age group) was a lot higher in a smaller group of runners.

I finished the race! I ran the whole 5K. As tempting as it was to stop and walk for a few seconds, I opted not to. I knew that if I had stop at all to walk, I would NOT want to start running again. After a long hiatus from running in a race, I've ran in my first race in quite a few years. I think the last race I ran in was the Freihofer's Run for Women 3 years ago?

I'm happy to say that I placed 2nd in my age group! It's a little scary since I've only started running (again) about a month ago. I've been running about 2 miles at least 4x a week. This will be a 5k. It's also going to be an evening race, at 7pm so I hope it won't be too hot! Temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees on Friday. Wish me luck and I'll blog my experience next time!

I've started a summer project using a sports weight yarn. It's called Kourtney. Pattern found here: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/kourtney. I started this on May 28th and I've been lots of progress on it already! I already have about 21" knitted! Stockinette Stitch goes fast for me and I've been a bit obsessive about knitting this thing! I'm currently working on the bust shaping and will be working on the straps this evening. I hope to have this done in the next few days. I thought this would be a cute top to wear during my vacation to Florida later this month.

I had this pink yarn in my stash. I knew that I had 4 balls of a darker pink and 2 balls of the lighter pink. I thought that I could do the bottom band and the ruffles in light pink. As it turned out, I had 3 shades of pink! Luckily for me, I used the middle shade of pink for the bottom so I think it may be okay. I'm anxious to get this finish because I'm curious of how it will fit. I have not seen a photo of the top actually be worn on a (real) person.

So far, I'm enjoying my summer vacation. Already it's been hot but that's to be expected in this region of the country! I'm looking forward to doing some road trips this summer. On the way, I passed several fruit stands. I couldn't resist all the signs that screamed out at me "Fresh Peaches, Tree Ripened." What better than a fresh juicy peach? So on my way home, I stopped and got a bag of peaches. I couldn't wait to bite into the peach but to my big disappointment, they were not sweet at all. I attempted to make a peach cobbler but I was a big failure. I used splenda which is not good for baking and also unsweet peaches. (In fact, splenda is not good for any type of baking, hence the last bagel disaster)! Next time, it's regular sugar for all my bake goods. Anyways, I have 3 peaches left and I'll slice them up and add them to my yogurt for a special treat!

Recently, we also purchased a 4 wheeler. My daughter loves riding on it. It's nice to be able to see our whole property. We discovered that we have several blueberry bushes along with blackberries! Last night, I picked a bunch of blackberries and I've been enjoying them by the handful! I may opt to try making a blackberry cobbler later.

I have not made a lot progress on my knitting. I have less than 10" done for my top. I had to undo several rows because my cables didn't flow. I probably still need to undo a few more and see where it goes. I may jump back to my anisette cardigan and seam all the pieces together.

This morning, the whole family went over to the park. There's a walking/running trail there. I thought it would be good for the family to get some exercise in. I ran 2 miles (3 times around the trail) and hubby walked about 1 1/2 miles with my daughter. It was good to get up early and get some exercise in for the day!

An update on my goats. I'm really enjoying them. I was thinking when hubby went out to buy them, they were going to be the minature ones but these 2 goats have really grown on me! I find myself going out to feed them corn and carrots. They are getting more comfortable with me where they will come up to me and take the carrots from my hands! I now have 1 dog, 20? chickens and 2 goats! I hope to add some sheeps in the future.

Jasmine's Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05038399448392906657noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7855834047788158276.post-20640174728822233992011-05-20T17:15:00.001-07:002011-06-15T03:31:48.036-07:00I'm BACKWow, my last post was back in July of 2010. That's a long time. I guess I got busy with LIFE.

My little girl has graduated from Kindergarten! Her ceremony was this Monday. Thursday was her official start of Summer vacation. Where has the time gone? It turned into a great year where she had the best teacher and paraprofessional I could ask for.

My daughter is awesome with computers. We discovered a few years ago that she learns extremely well with computers so we've been buying different education games. When her teacher suggested that we buy her an ipad around Christmas time, I wasn't so sure. I had no idea what an ipad, ipod, 3 G etc were. After doing some research, I am now very familiar with all those items and terms. I bought my daughter an ipad then decided an ipod may work better for her. (She loves both). I have actually grown to love the ipad which we share. I've loaded a lot of educational and DORA apps for her while I surf the net and play games. I never thought I would be into gadget but I can see how useful they are. I find myself using them alot because there's such a wealth of information at your finger tips. The best thing is that with a touch of a button your on the net, no waiting. Instant gratification!

Today, we added 2 new additions to our family. We purchased 2 goats. We've been talking about getting them for some time now and finally we did. We have a big property for them to eat the shrubs! Hopefully, they will also keep the snakes away too! I hope to add sheeps eventually so I can learn to spin yarn!

Speaking of yarn...I still enjoy knitting. I must admit that my knitting has really slowed down. It's hard to believe that I use to be able to knit a sweater in 2 weeks, now it's a month or more. I though with my daughter being in school, I'd have more free time for with my knitting. I get busy or just plain lazy. I also find that I'm so much more pickier with my choice of patterns. My patterns are free or purchased online. If I have to buy a pattern book or magazine, most of the time I just skip it, all together. Maybe I'm just moving on to the next phase of knitting and I need to come up with my own designs or pattern? Anyways, here's a few of my favorites that I've knitted. (I've fallen in love with cables, they are currently my favorite things to knit)!

The green sweater is called Valpuri, the gray sweater is the Star Cross'd Love Cardigan and the Red Skirt is called Carnaby.

My current knitting projects are the Anisette Cardigan and a cabled top. I am done knitting all the pieces for the Anisette Cardigan. I just have to sew the pieces together and then pick up stitches for the front band. I started the cabled top today. I'm basically winging this one and picking out a cable design I like and adding/changing some things to it. Hopefully, it will turn out nice in the end.

Well, I think that's it for now! Hopefully, I'll start to blog a little more regularly now and I'll be able to catch up on other people's blog too! :)

Jasmine's Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05038399448392906657noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7855834047788158276.post-25808688941892913722010-07-21T02:44:00.000-07:002010-07-21T14:31:10.110-07:00Tappan Zee Cardigan
Since my last project, I have been having a hard time deciding what project to do next. I finally decided on the Tappan Zee Cardigan from the summer issue of Knitty Magazine. The pattern seems easy enough and I always like to knit cardigans. Looking through my stash yarn, I decided to make this in a dark purple. It's definitely for a cool winter day or cold autumn night.

This project took over 3 weeks but it could of been a fast knit. With the scratchy yarn it really slowed down my knitting. There seems to be so much other things going on my life that knitting was not a top priority. Maybe after my daughter starts school in a few weeks, I can make knitting more of a priority again!

I decided to make some modifications to this pattern. I really like the yoke on the cardigan. After the 1st diamond pattern, I decided to add some cables. I borrowed the cable pattern loosely from a DROPS pattern. Finally, the bottom cable/lace pattern is from the book Ready, Set Cable. I was having fun trying out different patterns to see how it would turn out. It makes it more interesting! Maybe someday, I'll be brave enough to knit up a top or cardigan without a pattern!

Anyways, here's my cardi:

Front:

Back:

and

In other areas of my life, I doing the last preparation for my daughter before she starts kindergarten.
